The mobile carriers were working their hardest to improve network coverage in cities around the country in anticipation of 4th of July festivities. Cell phone reception tends to be spotty when large groups of people gather in one area for afternoon BBQs or firework shows. In Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Verizon Wireless has brought in COW to assist with network coverage over the long weekend. The mobile cell towers are being used more frequently in the Pacific Northwest – especially during large events attracting hundreds of thousands of people carrying 4G smart phones. “We as a company have been trying to plan ahead,” said Scott Charlston, a spokesman for the company. We recently wrote about the company’s attempt to prepare for communications outages during Tropical Storm Arthur. This is just another example of mobile carriers working to keep their customers happy by implementing additional infrastructure. With more and more people upgrading their cell phones to 4G LTE smart phones, there is need for more network coverage during large gatherings, Charlston said. “People are beginning to realize they can use their phones to download a movie over the wireless network in a matter of minutes,” he said. “There are all kinds of things people are doing with their phones now.”
