Telecom Egypt says it is bringing the first 5G network to Egypt. The network, which will use Nokia’s equipment, will be available initially in Alexandria, Aswan, Cairo, Giza, and Luxor. The deal brings Nokia’s total of commercial 5G deals up to 320, with 111 live 5G networks, according to the OEM.
Under an agreement with Nokia, the MNO will deploy a 5G RAN equipment from Nokia, including its AirScale baseband units, Nokia’s ReefShark System-on-Chip, and Massive MIMO radios. The deal also includes Nokia’s professional services, encompassing deployment, integration, and network optimization.
“This new agreement with Nokia further strengthens our strong partnership, reaffirms our commitment to providing cutting-edge digital services, and positions us at the forefront of the 5G revolution,” said Mohamed Al Fowey, Vice President, and Chief Technology Officer at Telecom Egypt.
New launches of commercial 5G services slowed in the first half of 2023 to just 10, according to S&P Global, totalling 249 operators across 97 markets worldwide as of June 30, 2023. Ericsson had more than 300 and Nokia at 263 total 5G “relationships,” including trials, wins and network deployments mid-2023. Huawei, however, is thought to be the global 5G leader with its strong presence in the massive mainland China market.
