Telefónica (NYSE: TEF) and Nokia (NYSE: NOK) are partnering to bring advanced 5G Standalone technology to customers in consumer, enterprise, and industrial markets. Capacity Media reported that Telefónica will deploy Nokia’s Network Exposure Function (NEF), which adheres to 3GPP specifications and provides a standardized interface for core network functions. The use case, rolling out in Spain and Germany, will aim to drive widespread usage of 5G SA, enable better customer experiences, and create new revenue opportunities.

“We are pleased to take this step with Nokia, recognizing the tremendous opportunity to empower developers with the tools they need to deliver new use cases and experiences,” said Cayetano Carbajo Martin, core and transport director, global CTIO at Telefónica.

The partners will also explore new API opportunities using Nokia’s Network as Code platform and developer portal. NEF can support API mashups, empowering developers to craft innovative applications. According to Capacity Media, Telefónica envisions developers leveraging the 5G network capabilities to enable precise device location services, advanced connectivity-based notifications, edge discovery, and more.

“Our agreement with Telefónica exemplifies the growing openness in the telco ecosystem, and we look forward to supporting developers in harnessing a broader array of network capabilities,” added Shkumbin Hamiti, head of network monetization platform, cloud and network services at Nokia.

Since last September, Nokia says it signed 14 network operators and ecosystem partners to utilize the Network as Code platform. Partners reside in Europe, North America, and South America.
