Serving the nine surrounding counties in south central Illinois, educational hub Kaskaskia College has contracted for a new communications tower. As WGEL-FM reports, the college’s Board of Trustees worked with Clinton County officials to secure a 40-year land lease agreement.
The agreement specifies that a one dollar yearly fee will allow the county to construct an emergency communications tower on college property. The selected site will place the new tower near the campus’ wastewater treatment facility.
Clinton County has indicated that the Kaskaskia College tower is slated as the first of three new cell towers planned for the region. In addition the county also plans to refurbish some of their existing towers to modernize the equipment.
With the college’s current cell service described as “unsatisfactory,” there are plans underway to entice a major cellular provider to make use of the new cell towers. Construction of the structures is scheduled to begin this spring.
