The Tower Climbers United/Communications Workers of America (TCU/CWA) has won a settlement in its case against Swartley Tower Services Communications, Inc. (STS Communications), on behalf of Roland Bachelder, a tower climber who had been terminated for his support of the union.
The $25,000 settlement was reached after TCU/CWA filed an unfair labor practice charge against STS Communications with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), alleging that Bachelder had been discriminated against and unjustly terminated for his union activity. The NLRB found merit to the charges and issued a complaint against STS Communications.
“We will hold employers like STS Communications to account and we will fight for safety and security for workers in the wireless industry,” said Claude Cummings Jr., President of the Communications Workers of America. STS did not respond to a request for comment.
Bachelder, who had more than a decade of experience as a tower technician, became a founding member of TCU/CWA in February 2021, and was vocal about his support for the union movement at work and publicly. On June 10, 2022, Bachelder discussed his support with management for unionizing all the employees at STS, and four days later he was terminated with no explanation, according to TCU/CWA.
