United Arab Emirates carrier “etisalat by e&” has entered into a strategic alliance with Huawei to unveil what they say is the first net-zero 5G Massive MIMO site deployment in the Middle East North Africa region.
The companies showcased the technology at the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP28. The demo site includes a number of solar power and smart energy storage solutions. Managed by NetEco, an AI system, the site’s energy consumption is optimized, with a focus on real-time energy management. It uses a 64T64R 384-antenna array, multi-band remote radio unit and green antennas, improving energy efficiency up to 25 percent. The multi-band RRU reduces radio weight up to 66 percent.
Powered by an AI-based energy management system, the technology is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by around 26 tons per year, according to Khalid Murshed, Chief Technology and Information Officer at etisalat by e&.
“This initiative demonstrates our ability to marry technology and sustainability, engaging world leaders in a dialogue on climate action,” Murshed said. “Our vision is to be at the forefront of sustainable technologies that support the UAE’s Net-Zero 2050 strategy.”
