Vantage Data Centers, a DigitalBridge Group portfolio company based in Denver and a global provider of hyperscale data centers, is developing a new 48 MW data center campus in London. The site, dubbed LHR1, is situated on nearly five acres in the PowerGate neighborhood of North Acton, in the northwest part of the city. With a planned investment of nearly $540 million, LHR1 will have a total capacity of 430,000 square feet across two 24 MW multi-story data centers when completed. The first facility will accommodate hyperscale customers and cloud providers in late 2024.

London is the largest of the four FLAP (Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris) markets in Europe and one of the top three data center markets in the world. LHR1 will be VDC’s 11th data center campus and will house the company’s 30th data center in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region.

“Vantage has experienced rapid growth over the past three years as we continue developing state-of-the-art data center campuses across EMEA,” said Antoine Boniface, VDC president-EMEA. “With London being one of the largest data center markets in the world, this expansion further solidifies Vantage’s role at the forefront of the digital infrastructure revolution. With relatively little inventory available in London and requirements on the rise, we are ideally positioned to deliver for our customers.”

“The continuing demand for data centers in London offers a prime opportunity for Vantage Data Centers to make its entrance into the highly-coveted market,” said Tim Kay, deputy director for technology, Department for International Trade in London. “Vantage’s presence in London will play a key role in enabling leading technology enterprises with additional IT capacity to support digital transformation initiatives and cloud adoption.”

Along with the London campus development, Vantage has completed the first 12 MW buildout of a second 40 MW facility at its growing Cardiff, Wales campus, the second largest data center market in the U.K. Once fully developed, the 46-acre Cardiff campus will include three data centers totaling 148 MW across two million square feet, operating entirely on renewable energy sources. Located in the U.K.’s tech corridor near the M4 expressway and just 100 miles from London city center, the Cardiff campus can provide low latency connections of less than 1.5 milliseconds between Wales and London.

“We are delighted to welcome customers to our newest data center in Cardiff,” said Justin Jenkins, VDC chief operating officer, Europe and president, U.K. “The significant investment Vantage is making in Wales is transforming the area into one of Europe’s leading data center hubs and a top cloud region in the U.K. This is great news for the local economy as the added capacity will attract more global companies to the region, ensuring additional work for hundreds of local contractors on site and creating new permanent job opportunities.”
