Verizon Business, Thames Freeport, and Nokia announced a joint partnership to deploy Verizon Private 5G Networks across critical logistics, manufacturing, and innovation hubs along the River Thames Estuary in the U.K. The initiative forms the backbone of a multiyear, multibillion-dollar transformation effort aimed at revitalizing one of the U.K.’s busiest maritime corridors.

The 5G network is designed to provide scalable, high-performance connectivity to support advanced technologies such as AI, edge computing, and IoT—modernizing port operations and manufacturing processes. The deployment also aims to boost the local economy through workforce development, job reskilling, and R&D collaboration.

Thames Freeport has already created 1,400 jobs and plans to scale up to 5,000 by 2030, emphasizing high-skill training for nearby communities. Nokia will supply all hardware and software via its Digital Automation Cloud and MX Industrial Edge platforms, enabling capabilities like real-time logistics orchestration, autonomous vehicle control, predictive maintenance, and safety monitoring.
