In February, Maine lobbyists reported per state law, payments received since December from clients, the Washington Times reported. Verizon Wireless was on the list which stated the company spent nearly $10,000 backing a bill to expand broadband access, making it easier to install small cell antennas on traffic signals, streetlights, and other structures.
According to Verizon lobbyist Jim Cohen, small cell technology can help target areas in a low-profile way. Additional telecommunications companies, including The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association and AT&T, have also reported lobbying on the bill. However, there is opposition from The Maine Municipal Association and the City of Portland, arguing the measure will limit local control over whether it should become law, reported the Washington Times.
