Vietnamese mobile network operators are continuing to build out 5G infrastructure nationwide, according to reports from the Authority of Radio Frequency Management. The three primary carriers—Viettel, VNPT, and MobiFone—have collectively installed approximately 11,000 5G base stations, currently providing coverage to about 26 percent of Vietnam’s 100 million population, VoIP Review reported

Viettel currently leads with over six million 5G users and has set a target of reaching 10 million by year-end. The company intends to deploy an additional 20,000 base stations, aiming to increase transmission speeds by more than 2.5 times. VNPT is expanding its 5G services particularly in key industrial zones, while MobiFone is concentrating on urban and provincial regions.

Despite these initiatives, Doan Quang Hoan, vice chairman of the Radio and Electronics Association of Vietnam, observes that 5G rollout has not yet reached widespread momentum. Presently, the MNO infrastructure mainly serves urban residents that want advanced digital applications, while a significant number of subscribers continue using 4G.

Earlier this year, Viettel acquired a 700 MHz spectrum block for approximately $75.2 million. This frequency band is suitable for urban and rural coverage and is expected to support a range of applications, including IoT solutions for smart cities and intelligent transportation systems. This spectrum allocation forms part of Viettel’s objective to achieve 99 percent nationwide 5G coverage by 2030, VoIP Review reported.

The 5G rollout has proceeded through several phases. Viettel launched Vietnam’s first commercial 5G service in late 2024. VNPT and MobiFone followed with their own offerings in December 2024 and March 2025, respectively.
