We’re Five Today!

Inside Towers is celebrating five years in print today.  Take the day off! Wait. Cancel that. If we don’t get the day off, you shouldn’t either.

When our founders, George Reed and Eddie Esserman began this venture in 2013, skepticism abounded.  Could our market support a daily newsletter? Was there enough news to fill it? Did it need a daily?  “Yes” x 3. Fast forward to current day and when I tell someone outside the industry what I do, they are puzzled that a) our industry exists at all and b) we can find a dozen or so stories about it every single day.

Volume 1, Issue 1, October 23, 2013  started out with a bang: “Crown Castle Acquires AT&T Towers” followed by “Could Google Use Balloons to Eventually Replace Towers?” So, did all of those macro towers that were built since then pop all of those balloons? If so, Google has destroyed the evidence and won’t talk about it.

What is interesting about those issues just five years ago is what was not mentioned: fiber, edge, 5G, latency, IoT, drones. The evolution of macro towers as the hubs of 4 and 5G deployment were on only a few futuristic drawing boards.

I’ve been here for roughly half of that time and, looking back on our first issues, noticed a difference in the variety, content and depth of our coverage.  We have grown editorially with the addition of our Washington Bureau Chief, Leslie Stimson and our versatile features writer Keara Piekanski. John Celentano has joined us as a contributing writer as well, with laser-focused insights on market developments.

We have plenty of changes in the works that will reflect our growth and the growth of the market as well.  Thank you for being a part of it and we look forward to another five as your day-in, day-out news resource for this “un-poppable” and unstoppable industry.
