A sustainable wooden cell tower is scheduled to be built in the town of Neunkirchen, near North Rhine-Westphalia in 2025. The 131-foot tall Ecopol tower, which is manufactured by the Finnish company Ecotelligent, will be Germany’s third wooden cell tower as the concept takes root in the country. With the construction of these wooden cell towers, Vantage Towers, together with Ecotelligent, is marking the beginning of a more sustainable mobile communications industry.
Ecopol towers, which are built from recyclable wood, have a lower carbon footprint than comparable towers made of steel or concrete. In addition, they are designed to blend in better with their surroundings, which increases the acceptance of telecommunication infrastructure among the local zoning boards.
“At Vantage Towers, sustainability and digitalization are not contradictions, but go very much hand in hand,” Christian Hillabrant, CEO of Vantage Towers, said. “The community had actively sought the construction of a wooden mast. The excellent cooperation with the municipality is a prime example of how the mobile communications rollout in rural areas can succeed.”
In May of this year, the tower operator built Germany’s first wooden-structured telecommunications mast, a 98-foot tall Ecopol tower, in Bechtolsheim.. Another Ecopol tower is to be completed this year in Leiwen, also in Germany while in nearby Neunkirchen, the 130-foot version of the wooden structure will be used for the first time.
