Comtech and Eutelsat OneWeb have joined forces to deliver LEO satellite connectivity to Antarctica. The pair launched a trial in January to deliver data up to 120 Mbps, reported SatellitePro ME.

The trial leverages Comtech’s Elevate VSAT ground system and Eutelsat OneWeb, delivering LEO connectivity services. SatellitePro ME reported that Comtech’s Elevate ground system offers a transportable, software-defined VSAT system providing customers access to high-speed connectivity across diverse satellite constellations in multiple orbits.

Designed to seamlessly identify, collect, and route data from various satellite constellations and orbits, Elevate also delivers next-generation capabilities such as 4K video streaming and voice services.

John Ratigan, Interim CEO of Comtech, said: “This is a remarkable achievement—not only for the satellite industry, but also for the broader scientific, technology, and connectivity markets around the world.”

SatellitePro ME underscored the importance of the trial to the scientific community, who often live in Antarctica’s remote and challenging environment for up to 18 months at a time. The LEO connectivity can enhance scientists’ well-being during and after working hours according to SatellitePro ME.
