Severed Fiber Optic Cables Cause Delays at Sacramento Airport

Some travelers journeying through the Sacramento International Airport in California last Thursday found themselves stuck waiting after it was discovered that fiber optic cables had been cut. As the Sacramento Bee reports, it appears that the AT&T lines delivering internet service to the facility were deliberately severed.

The damaged section was located outside the boundaries of airport property. An officer from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office described the damage as “deliberate” rather than accidental.

Sacramento County law enforcement is “investigating it as a crime scene,” according to spokesperson, Scott Johnston. AT&T representative, Chris Collins, agreed that slicing the cable appeared to be an act of vandalism or possibly an attempt at theft, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Inconvenience was the major consequence of the damage with approximately 35 percent of the air traffic experiencing delays when airlines were unable to check in passengers. Southwest and Delta service suffered the brunt of the outages, delaying 60 planes from departing on schedule until service was restored. AT&T reports that the situation was resolved fairly quickly with the worst of the delays lasting only two hours.
