A communications tower on top of Sugarloaf Mountain in Carrabassett Valley, Maine bent in half Monday as hurricane-force winds, up to Category Five, hit New England, according to WCBV-TV. TDS of Maine, also known as Somerset Telephone Company, owns the site used by Homeland Security and Franklin County Communications. No injuries were reported at the site.
The Sugarloaf Ski Club, who owns and leases the property on the summit to a number of tower companies, closed all of its lifts Monday afternoon due to strong winds but not due to the collapse.
“We don’t use them in any operational capacity, so this shouldn’t affect mountain operations in any noticeable way,” a resort spokesperson told WCBV-TV.
