Cellfie Mobile secured the exclusive rights to deploy 5G spectrum in the country of Georgia, winning an auction in which it was the sole bidder, according to TelecomTalk. It has partnered with Nokia to upgrade the existing 4G infrastructure and roll out 5G across the country, which is at the intersection of Europe and Asia.

On August 17, Cellfie Mobile “won” the 5G spectrum auction, which included frequencies in the 700 MHz and 3400-3600 MHz frequency bands, and then it “won” channels at 1800 MHz and 2600 MHz on August 24. In total, $1.7 million was spent on the spectrum.

The carrier received a 20 percent discount on the spectrum in exchange for agreeing to allow a mobile virtual network operator to use its infrastructure and use some of its spectrum. Two other carriers, MagtiCom and SilkNet, which chose not to participate in the auction, collectively own more than 70 percent of the telecom market, according to TelecomTalk.
