It took nearly a decade and a half, but Mahwah’s Council finally approved the installation of a tower by Wireless EDGE Towers II, reported NorthJersey.com. The tower is planned for firehouse property to close a 2-mile-wide dead zone, which affects an estimated 5,300 residents.
Last Tuesday, when the Council approved the tower motion after 14 years of back and forth, the crowd in attendance stood and clapped.
Councilman James Wysocki said he made his mind up when driving by Silver Creek. “I saw a guy in a wheelchair, and I asked myself – ‘what would happen if he fell in the lake?’”
Mayor John Roth said the lease “provides significant revenue for the township as well as service to the Masonicus area.” According to Township Attorney Brian Campion, the annual base rent the township will receive is $62,012 for the first carrier and $43,408 for up to three additional co-locators.
The township still needs to sign the lease, and Wireless EDGE Towers II must also obtain other governmental approvals. These compliances include New Jersey DEP wetlands delineation, municipal site plan approval and building permits, said Campion.
