Beginning this week, aspiring drone operators can earn a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification, reports PetaPixel.com. The remote ID training is designed to make it easier for currently certified drone pilots to renew their credentials without in-person testing.

The online recertification is free, unlike the live testing which included a $150 fee. A Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification is required for anyone operating a drone for commercial usage.

Upon completion of the course, a certificate will be issued that can be printed, or stored digitally. The drone pilot certification must be renewed every two years. Anyone with a recently lapsed certification should not fly commercially until the test is completed, but once passed, good standing will be renewed.

The roll-out of the new online testing was delayed from its original March debut date, but the FAA is now ready to guide drone pilots through the new format, reports PetaPixel.com. The online testing has also been updated with new rules involving night flights.
