The area is referred to on maps as “Swampoodle.”  The agency’s previous landlord, Republic Properties Corp., fought the move, citing a potential conflict of interest between the FCC’s leasing agency, CBRE and the owner of a new building the Commission will relocate to — Sentinel Square III, TCC.

The General Services Administration announced the dispute was resolved and the GSA has awarded the FCC’s lease to Trammell Crow Co.’s Sentinel Square development in NoMa, which stands for North of Massachusetts Avenue. The area is near NPR and the Washington Convention Center.

The FCC signed the first lease at the 545,823-square-foot Sentinel Square III development, according to the developer Trammell Crow who says the building at 45 L St. Northeast is scheduled to break ground this May. The FCC is leasing nearly 473,000 square feet and will occupy part of the first two floors and all of floors three through 10. The building will be 11 stories tall.

The agency has long-planned to use less space from its current 602,000 square foot lease. The FCC has been at its current headquarters at the Portals II building at 445 12th St. Southwest since 1997, when the agency moved from M Street in Northwest, Washington. At the time, the move consolidated employees that were spread out in eight other locations across D.C. into one building. Plans now are for employees to move by November, 2019.
