New York reported its first case of coronavirus yesterday as more cases piled up on the west coast. In the meantime, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is planning for the possibility that the president could make an emergency declaration to bring in extra funds and personnel to assist the administration’s response to the virus, reported NBC News.
Whatever happens, the FCC is prepared. Personnel are reviewing the agency’s pandemic plan. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai told reporters Friday: “We are prepared to implement that plan, if necessary.” He said the virus has already affected travel plans of Commission employees.
Inside Radio reports that included agency staffers who were to attend the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona until last week’s event was cancelled. Commissioner Geoffrey Starks said the FCC may have a larger role if the situation worsens here.
“Schools may be closed. People may need to work from home. So, there is a broadband access element here,” he said. Starks also noted that 911 call centers may receive a torrent of calls from concerned Americans.
