FirstNet and AT&T delivered the initial state plans on Monday via a secure online portal. They said delivery is three months ahead of schedule because states, territories and public safety officials wanted to move quickly.
“With this step, we’re ready to deliver the first nationwide network for public safety, by public safety,” said FirstNet CEO Mike Poth in the announcement. “This network will drive innovation, security and interoperability for public safety across the country. It’s what EMS, fire and law enforcement spent years fighting for and need right now.”
States and territories can spend up to 45 days to review the plans. The states and territories will also have the opportunity to exchange feedback with FirstNet before an official 90-day clock starts for each state or territory governor to make an “opt-in/opt-out” decision on its state plan.
Information not released on Monday includes how much states would have to pay if they “opt-out” and decide to build their own LTE Radio Access Network that must be interoperable with FirstNet. FirstNet officials wanted to be sure the information is aligned with policy decisions being made by the FCC and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, reported Urgent Communications.
This Thursday the FCC plans to vote on how the agency will address FirstNet-related duties, Inside Towers reported.
