More than 30 Democratic congresswomen are urging the Biden Administration to make Jessica Rosenworcel permanent Chair of the FCC. Biden appointed the senior Democrat on the Commission as Acting Chair in January. If Biden agrees, Rosenworcel would be the first woman to serve as permanent chair of the agency.

Rosenworcel “has spent years raising the important voices and unique needs of women that have been ignored for far too long in technology and telecommunications policy,” thirty-three female lawmakers led by Reps. Anna Eshoo (D-CA) and Jackie Speier (D-CA) wrote. “In her eight years as a Commissioner of the FCC, Jessica Rosenworcel has elevated the voices and needs of women.”

Rosenworcel headed her first open FCC meeting last week, when she announced the launch of a new task force dedicated to improving broadband mapping and data collection. She has also pushed for improved internet access for low-income communities in her time as a commissioner that began in 2012.

“In its nearly 90-year history, the FCC has embarrassingly never had a woman as a permanent chair,” wrote the lawmakers. “This is an unacceptable reality for an agency that oversees one-sixth of our nation’s economy and makes consequential decisions that impact all Americans.”
