Monday, NVIDIA and SoftBank Group Corp. announced a definitive agreement under which NVIDIA will acquire Arm Limited from SoftBank for $40B in cash and stock, which the companies claim will create the world’s premier computing company for the age of AI. The goal of the merger is to create an AI research center in Cambridge, England. Hosting an Arm/NVIDIA-based supercomputer, the facility is designed to serve as a hub for collaboration by AI researchers, scientists and startups across the U.K. and the world.

The combination brings together NVIDIA’s AI computing platform with Arm’s ecosystem. SoftBank will remain a participant in the development of the project through its 10 percent ownership stake in NVIDIA.

“AI is the most powerful technology force of our time and has launched a new wave of computing,” said NVIDIA Founder/CEO Jensen Huang. “In the years ahead, trillions of computers running AI will create a new internet-of-things that is thousands of times larger than today’s internet-of-people. Our combination will create a company fabulously positioned for the age of AI.”

The center in Cambridge will include:

  • An Arm / NVIDIA-based supercomputer
  • Research Fellowships and Partnerships
  • AI Training
  • Startup Accelerator
  • Industry Collaboration
