The Neshaminy School Board’s Facilities and Planning Committee unanimously rejected a proposed Verizon Wireless tower at Poquessing Middle School in Lower Southampton (PA), reported the Bucks County Courier Times. After residents opposed the tower over health concerns and decreased property values, the school board voted 4-0 to deny the 105-foot tower project.
School board president and committee chair Marty Sullivan said this should be the last word on the matter.
Proposals that don’t receive approval by committee don’t typically go to the school board for consideration. “It’s not moving to the full board,” he said after the vote. “It dies right here.”
If approved, the tower lease would have paid the school district $20,000 a year to start. Although this project was vetoed, school board committee member Steve Pirritano said a tower still could be coming to a nearby spot close to school grounds.
Since Lower Southampton lacks coverage, Verizon spokesman David Weissman responded to the Courier Times in an email. “We are interested in making investments in the network locally that will improve coverage and capacity for our customers and first responders. Lower Southampton Township requires us to look at municipal and school district-owned properties prior to considering other land. We remain interested in making network investments,” said Weissman.
