AT&T has opened a 5G Innovation Studio in Plano, TX to showcase how broadband, 5G, and emerging technologies can be used cohesively to enhance the user experience. The telecom hopes the Studio will drive the widespread adoption of 5G, reported Dallas Innovates.

“5G is here, and we’ve only scratched the surface of its potential,” AT&T said in a news release. “We’re excited about the possibilities, but it’s important to remember it’s not just about speed—it’s about being transformational.”

The Studio demonstrates how the next-generation technology can be cost-effective in sports, retail, education, travel, the public sector, and small businesses. AT&T, along with Studio sponsors Ericsson and Nokia, plans to work with customers and industry executives to ideate, test, and validate 5G-centric implementations.

AT&T is not stopping at 5G innovation, reported Dallas Innovates. According to the company, “Technologies like WiFi 6 and CBRS cellular solutions are developing at an exponential rate, and we’ll continue to factor these and others in our explorations.”

Two of the Studio’s current projects include delivery drones and holographic communications. In partnership with Microsoft and EVA, AT&T is exploring how it can use 5G and edge computing for near real-time drone control. Regarding holograms, AT&T is building upon its HoloVision product, powered by 5G, to envision new ways to enable immersive holographic experiences.

“These use cases are just the beginning,” the company wrote via email to Dallas Innovates. “Imagine a future where remote grandparents can watch their grandchildren take their first steps in 3D.”
