Digicel Fiji and Digicel Samoa announced that 5G is coming to both island nations thanks to a partnership with Nokia (NYSE: NOK). As Developing Telecoms reports, statements were released by Digicel to reassure each population that the new cell towers do not come with health concerns attached.

“There is no scientific evidence linking telecommunications technologies, including 5G, to adverse health impacts,” noted the Digicel release, “We are taking every measure to ensure a safe and seamless rollout of 5G technology,”

The company’s statement is inline with the stance of the World Health Organization, which asserts that digital communications do not imperil human health.

Digicel made the announcements to counter some of the misinformation that has been circulating that has caused undue alarm about the presence of cell towers in the community. “We encourage individuals to rely on credible sources and expert opinions when assessing information related to telecommunications and health,” advised Digicel.

Digicel Fiji said that it expects “imminent completion” of the  regulatory approvals needed from the Fiji Government to launch its 5G service, notes Developing Telecoms. Conditional approval to continue with its 5G rollout was already granted to Digicel Samoa. Vodafone is also positioning to expand to the islands though Digicel has been the first to address 5G safety concerns.

“Due to advancements in network design and device power management, 5G technology emits lower levels of EME compared to previous generations like 2G, 3G and 4G,” commented Digicel, adding that the company has undergone rigorous testing in both Fiji and Samoa and has satisfied all established local safety regulations for 5G delivery.
