Louisiana Town Frustrated as Fiber Broadband Delays Continue

Residents of Lake Providence, LA, are growing frustrated after years of delays in bringing fiber broadband to the rural community. A planned celebration for expanded high-speed internet was scaled back after funding disputes stalled construction once again, according to Govtech.

Community group Delta Interfaith has spent five years pushing for reliable fiber service, facing setbacks including grant challenges, changes to the federal BEAD program, and the loss of $6.2 million in federal funding that was redirected from fiber provider Conexon to SpaceX’s Starlink satellite service. Conexon says it still plans to build fiber in the town but is waiting on millions in reimbursements from Louisiana’s broadband office. State officials say payments depend on compliance reviews and audits being completed.
