Now more than ever, mobile network operators and towercos are seeking ways to optimise their existing resources and eliminate unnecessary costs. While this is a global trend, affecting players from east to west, the ever-changing Asian telecom infrastructure landscape is pushing boundaries in terms of innovation and new trends.
TowerXchange recently spoke with Ascend Telecom’s CEO, Dr Sushil Kumar Chaturvedi, to find out more about the Indian towerco’s energy management and overall efficiency strategy. Here is a snapshot of insights he shared with TowerXchange with useful takeaways for anyone seeking to optimise their portfolios.
Reducing the dependence on air conditioning is key
Did you know that just one kg of R22 gas – which is utilised as refrigerator in most air conditioning systems – causes the same harm to the environment as 2,000kg of carbon dioxide? Read more about Ascend’s air conditioner systems’ reduction efforts here.
The importance of choosing the right battery “fit for the job”
Ascend utilises a mix of VRLA, Li-ion and flow batteries, while also performing field tests with Nickel-Fe ones. The towerco has achieved significant savings by utilising Li-ion batteries only for auto-changeover between gensets and grid, rather than completely draining them. Read on here.
Ongoing staff training, monitoring and in-house O&M
Do you perform your O&M operations in-house or outsource it to a contractor? How well trained is your staff on the importance of preventive maintenance and accurate data monitoring and analysis? Do you feel your portfolio of assets is “under control” and do you know how your towers are doing and what’s installed on each of them?
Ascend has been developing in-house software and operates its own central and field teams to monitor the health of its portfolio. While outsourcing is definitely an attractive option, the industry as a whole should aim at maintaining high standards of control and efficiency. Find out the Ascend’s way here.
