Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) has awarded a new contract for an “unprecedented” countywide traffic signal synchronization project that aims to increase efficiency, safety, and sustainability across the entire county, SmartCitiesWorld reports. Under the terms of the $9.6 million agreement, smart mobility infrastructure specialist, Iteris, will provide signal timing design, operations, and maintenance for all 34 cities in Orange County, CA, which is one of the most populous counties in the U.S. with over three million people.

Iteris, Inc. (NASDAQ: ITI) based in Austin, TX, offers software as a service (SaaS), cloud-enabled managed services, consulting, and advisory services for smart mobility infrastructure management. Its designs rely on wired and wireless sensors and other devices that record and predict traffic conditions.

The OCTA project will be a strategic reset of the traffic signal synchronization baseline for more than 2,500 signals. This project represents a significant shift in how to address the need for dynamic traffic monitoring and management, and leveraging emerging technologies that enable such capability, according to the company.

Rather than using temporary and/or manual data collection methods that provide only limited insights, Iteris says it will utilize its ClearGuide SaaS solution to efficiently capture a wider range of signal performance metrics that will enable signal retiming and subsequent monitoring of the network.

With ClearGuide, Iteris traffic operations personnel can remotely monitor arterial travel times and reliability, identify congestion hotspots, and prioritize further retiming efforts to enhance network performance, SmartCitiesWorld reports.

This will also be Iteris’ first deployment of Signal trends, a new data-based solution within ClearGuide that helps implement and manage signal timing without reliance on roadside equipment.

Bernard Li, Iteris VP, mobility professional services, says. “The project represents an important shift toward data-driven decision making and continues OCTA’s position as a national leader in arterial management that focuses on safety and sustainability for all roadway users.”

Iteris explains its ClearGuide solution is a key component of the ClearMobility platform that applies cloud computing, artificial intelligence, advanced sensors, advisory services, and managed services to help ensure roads are safe, travel is efficient, and that communities can benefit from improved traffic flow.
