After registering the highest number of patents, Samsung has become the most innovative company in the world, according to India Forbes magazine. The publication quotes a Forex.com report that grades companies on the number of registered patents they secure and the amount of money they spend on R&D.
Samsung scored 9.25 out of 10 in the innovation score, with 8,513 registered patents in 2022 and a $20 billion annual R&D budget. Apple is second on the list, with a score of 9.03 and 2,313 patents and total annual R&D expenses of $29 billion.
“This patent portfolio is not just a measure of quantity, but also a marker of Samsung’s potential to disrupt markets and set new industry standards. Meanwhile, Apple’s considerable investment in intangible assets and sustainability initiatives showcases a strategic approach that blends cutting-edge innovation with environmental responsibility,” says Matthew Weller, head of global market commentary at Forex.com.
IBM was third on the list, followed by Johnson & Johnson, Toyota and Amazon. Other big R&D spenders that didn’t make the list included Intel, Alphabet, Meta and Qualcomm with $16 billion, $34 billion, $41 billion and $8 billion, respectively, spent on R&D.
