Satellites Riding Herd on South African Cattle

Combining the traditional concerns of livestock management with the advantages of modern technology, Sateliot and Streamline have joined forces to protect cattle in South Africa. The protection comes in the form of a cellular 5G IoT ear-tag that can monitor the health of the tagged animals and quickly locate individual members of the herd.

According to IOT Business News, Sateliot will be able to provide satellite 5G NB-IoT connectivity to 400,000 5G devices that Streamline intends to put into use by the end of 2023. The satellite service guarantees that the digital connection between the tag and the monitoring farmer will be continuous and unaffected by geographic limitations.

“Streamline has a state-of-the-art product, the ear tag Model STR-TG103/4, giving farmers certainty to have cattle under good condition. Nevertheless, farmers need coverage that only we can provide,” stated Sateliot CEO Jaume Sanpera. “Using our 5G-NB IoT satellite constellation [can] provide support and coverage to broader areas and even larger farms without a terrestrial network. This proves the IoT market is showing unstoppable growth, and is accelerating much faster than any other tech industry.”

Although Streamline currently monitors 7.95 million livestock animals in South Africa, the arrangement with Sateliot is their first venture with 5G satellite service. Both companies have suggested that the partnership will be a boon to farmers and will have worldwide applications.
