Lockheed Martin delivered what it’s saying is a first-of-its-kind 5G system to the U.S. Marines at Camp Pendleton, CA. The Defense Post reported that the Open Systems Interoperable and Reconfigurable Infrastructure Solution (OSIRIS) will help the military foster faster communication on the battlefield.

“The Lockheed Martin-led team, in close partnership with the U.S. Marine Corps, has proven that quickly evolving 5G commercial technology can be leveraged in near real-time to solve current and emergent mission challenges,” said Lockheed VP Deon Viergutz.

The Defense Post reported that the delivery included a trailer-mounted tower and an all-terrain vehicle mobile relay system. Testing is slated to begin “soon” at Camp Pendleton, with OSIRIS expected to allow troops to “connect to 5G-ready devices, sensors, and vehicles.”

OSIRIS can be integrated into intelligence and command platforms to reduce latency and increase communication speeds from “hours to minutes.” It’s also compliant with the Open-Radio Access Network 7.2 split architecture, enabling optimized bandwidth.
