Influential Senate Democrats asked regulators to look into a potential merger between T-Mobile and Sprint. Reutersreported the carriers could announce a deal by the end of the month.
Eight Senators led by Minnesota’s Amy Klobuchar expressed concern about any potential union to the FCC and Department of Justice. Such a deal would shrink the number of major U.S. wireless carriers to three, leading to less competition and potential higher prices for consumers, say the Senators in letters to both regulators.
“Beginning an investigation into a merger of T-Mobile and Sprint now will allow your agencies to quickly, but fully, review the agreement if it is announced,” wrote the Senators, reported The Hill. The other signatories are: Sens. Al Franken (MN), Patrick Leahy (VT), Richard Blumenthal (CT), Ron Wyden (OR), Kirsten Gillibrand (NY), Edward Markey (MA), and Jeff Merkley (OR).
