Ready for a cellular replacement for wired cable modems? In 2020, Qualcomm is bringing the Snapdragon X55 5G modem, and RF system for commercial 5G broadband to market, reported VentureBeat.

The “fixed wireless access customer-premises equipment” or 5G FWA CPE will use a 5G modem with millimeter-wave and/or sub-6 GHz wireless signaling.

The Snapdragon will deliver much faster performance than the sub-1 Gbps speeds commonly delivered with today’s wired home broadband.

OEMs around the world — in the Americas, Asia, and Europe — will work on devices for both consumer and business use; OEMs include Cradlepoint, Inseego, LG, Linksys, Netgear, Nokia, Panasonic, Samsung, and Sharp. In addition, brands focused on the enterprise market will target customers located in China and Taiwan, according to VentureBeat.

Qualcomm expects Snapdragon to empower carriers to bring 5G-caliber broadband to underserved regions quickly. “Due to the development ease of our integrated system and industry movement toward self-installed, plug-and-play CPE devices, we expect OEMs will be able to support fixed broadband deployments beginning in 2020,” said Qualcomm president Cristiano Amon.
