The opening day of the ISE Expo Virtual Conference began with Keynote Speaker Andrew Dugan, Chief Technology Officer, Lumen addressing how Lumen is approaching network transformation by leveraging Edge Compute, AI/ML and Lifecycle Service Orchestration (LSO) to improve automation for customers, carrier partners and employees.

Joshua Broder CEO, Tilson Technology Management, Inc led a session entitled 5G Pole Deployment and Fronthaul Fiber. Broder detailed emerging co-location use cases and challenges on utility pole, street furniture, and dense fronthaul fiber in the right-of-way. Broder provided an overview of current 5G densification projects including innovative pole deployment examples and dense fronthaul fiber.

“It’s all about speed and costs,” Broder said, “and building good locations with communities.” Broder said small cell pole siting is difficult for many reasons. He noted most existing light poles are structural “fails” since the power distribution at light poles is often low capacity with daisy chained 277 volt AC sources. He noted that $10K-plus sites costs are common.
