Obviously, there is a connection between fiber and towers but there didn’t seem to be any reason why tower companies would have an interest in purchasing fiber companies…until small cells emerged. Colby Synesael of Cowen and Company explained, “Interestingly, small cells seem to represent the intersection between fiber and tower companies in terms of services offered and thus we believe we could see some overlap/competition that didn’t historically exist. We also could potentially see more interest from tower companies in purchasing fiber companies to help accelerate their time to market. This was evident in CCI’s decision to acquire dark fiber provider 24/7 Mid-Atlantic last year, and we believe similar deals may be likely.”
